They can often be used in situations where learning with a real patient is rare/tough, for regular practice and understnding of certain procedures, or aiding theory. They have been used widely in the US but few medical schools in the UK are using them to their full potential.

In this video we hear from Maren Ebert, a medical student from Heidelberg University, Germany. She talks about her experiences using eViP Virtual Patients.

Have you used a virual patient before and what did you think of it?

Google Body is here. And boy, although it hasn’t yet it made an impact as far as we can see in the medical community, we like it, and we like it a lot.

Over the years as educationalists contributing to medical education, things come and go. Innovations are frequent, and new developments are normally hamstrung by copyright issues, usability issues, problems with institutional subscriptions, and restricted access to resources.

What is google body? One of our contributors explains…

Google Body lets you do several things, but basically its your own detailed 3d medical body, which you can zoom rotate, and add and remove anatomical layers with ease. Its so simple. I didn’t need any instructions, and I’m pretty sure todays crop of web savvy medical students won’t either. Google don’t specifically say who this is being marketed towards, but superficially it seems perfect for the medical students. I love it. I think you will love it too

Lets consider whats possible. Take a view of the shoulder. The nervous innovation, vascular supply, bursa, tendons and glenoid fossa are all clearly on view. Rotation is simple. Zooming in and out is simple and straightforward. Moving through the different soft tissue plains and adding and removing nervous tissue, bony anatomy, vascular system in what is a very user friendly navigation system.

As a group of educationalists, the potential for medical student and patient education is really fantastic, and whilst the items remain free, we’re all for it.

It really is the next best thing to a three dimensional model. We have been commenting on Google body through our Twitter account, under the hash tag #googlebody. We would be interested to hear medical students opinions on this, and a simple rating scale is below if you want to register your opinion on it, or post a comment below on whether you think it can be used as a good resource for medical students.

The organisatoin EVIP has been created to bring together a bank of virtual patients for medical students. This will hopefully be open access for all to learn from. An exciting proposition!

In this interview, Dr David Davies from the University of Warwick, UK, talks to Dr James Bateman about the role of virtual patients, and the challenges of incorporating them into the medical curriculum.

We’re really excited about our new slide technology and the potential it has for creating dynamic, interactive slides with audio and video.

The technology is from the kind folks at iSpring who have collaborated with us to enable us to start producing some great interactive slides for student medical education.

Take a look at our first foray below – it’s a guide to assessing and evaluating back pain.

We have big plans for the future for this – OSCE stations anyone? We feel its an excellent string to our already strong bow of MCQs, video, podcasts and guides. And of course all new content we produce will be available, at no extra cost, to our members.

We would love to hear what you think of it and are open to all of your ideas for developing educational content for medical students. Let us know what you want to see!

Medical Schools are increasingly relying on simulator based training. Several univerities across the UK and several of the training Colleges for postgraduate education are becoming involved in the field.

But what do you think of it as students? These models are often costly, locked away and the actual face to face training you get with them is minimal. Is may be a good use of time and resources to train you, but do you feel it is effective in the institution you work in.

Also from an exam perspective:

Do any medical students have any simulator topics they would like to be covered specifically in an exam situation (e.g. approach to pulmonary embolism)

Have any students faced these simulators in an exam (excluding ALS stations)? As far as I’m aware although they’re used in an interview setting its not clear that they are ready yet to be rolled out across the whole curriculum

We’d be interested to hear comments and tips from students from the UK and also abroad
